DIY Easy Mermaid Outfits to Make Your Party Awesome
Have a little one obsessed with singing “Part of Your World?” Are you replaying The Little Mermaid TV special or are you on the edge of your seat for the newest live-action movie? If so, it’s time to throw a mermaid-themed party that blows everyone else out of the water.
But to do this, your party guests need to transform from humans into adorable mermaids. Don’t worry, we’re not going to be shellfish! We’ll share our tips for easy DIY mermaid costumes that you can make ahead of time for all of your fishy friends.
All you need to go from fishy to fabulous are these no-sew mermaid tails by Living Locurto. We know how busy you are, and spending hours pricking yourself with a needle while you try to sew DIY mermaid tails isn’t what you want on Friday night.
That’s why this is the perfect project. To make these mermaid tails, you’ll need
- A yard of fabric per mermaid tail
- Additional fabric for colored tail
- Hot glue gun
First, you’ll cut the yard of fabric into the shape above. These are quick, and even when not perfect, the little girls will love them. So, don’t fret over it too much!
Once you have your fabric cut, you’ll need to place a small strip of Velcro on the waist to help keep it on your child’s waist. You’ll need to measure your little one to see approximately where to put the Velcro on, but most likely, you’ll have one piece slightly off-centered and another on the opposite side. In between the Velcro, cut a small hole. This hole will allow you to pull the rest of the fabric through it and tie it in a knot. That way, both sides of the skirt/tail will be held up.
Hot glue some extra fabric on the fin portion if you’d like different colored fins. Then, hot glue the edges of the tail so that your cut edge isn’t showing. After that, repeat until all of the little mermaids have a tail.
Want to provide more than just a tail? This easy DIY mermaid costume is as cute as can be. Though this one will require a bit of sewing, any beginner seamstress can handle it. For this project, you’ll need:
- Scale-patterned material
- Green tulle
This mermaid costume starts out with a stretchy top that has a scale pattern on it. You can buy this fabric at any fabric store, and it comes in multiple colors. Just cut a strip that will fit your daughter like a shirt and sew in a straight line down the back so you have a tube top.
You can add ribbons and a shell for the straps, or you can leave it strapless. To make the tail, all you need is to measure your little one’s waist with elastic and then sew the elastic ends together. Then, loop long stands of tulle over the elastic. Tie it in a knot and let the two tulle ends hang. Repeat until the skirt is full.
Once you put the skirt on, take one last strand of tulle and tie it toward the bottom of the skirt to create that mermaid look.
Even adults can feel like they’re under the sea with this Lauren Conrad DIY mermaid costume. Adorable and easy to make, this mermaid costume will make you as magical as all the other party guests. To make this, you’ll need:
- Two large seashells
- Smaller seashells
- Corset or strapless bra
- Shimmery fabric for the tail
- Sequined fabric
- Tulle in multiple shades
- Needle and thread
- Straight pins
- Glue gun
Starting with your corset or strapless bra, glue on the shells with the hot glue gun and set aside to dry.
To make the tail, Lauren starts with shimmery fabric and then ties it around her body. Then, she ties the sequined material on top of that. Using the tulle, make layered tufts and sew them by hand with a few stitches to the base layer of shimmery fabric. This will peek through the back of the sequin fabric, so it doesn’t need to be perfect! It just adds that flowing tail look.
When you’re finished sewing tufts of tulle, put the costume on and make sure to safety pin the top of the skirt around you to keep it from falling.
